STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON Impresses With First Trailer (NSFW)

With so many high-profile franchise films like Avengers: Age of Ultron, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and Furious 7 dominating the conversation, it’s easy to forget there are also some very compelling looking original films slated to come out this year. Case in point: Straight Outta Compton. Yes, there’s totally a movie all about the early days of N.W.A., one of music’s most notorious hip-hop groups. And now, after months of waiting, we have our first, very NSFW trailer (like really, really NSFW). Check it out:

This thing certainly has all the makings of an epic biopic, but more importantly, an epic story. And especially in a year when Empire is topping ratings all across the country on Fox, it’s hard to imagine there being a more perfect environment for a film about N.W.A. to succeed on some massive fronts.

But, beyond what looks like an amazing ride through the politics of the music business and social constructs of mid-80s America, one of the most interesting things for us about the biopic is its director: F. Gary Gray. From Friday to The Negotiator and The Italian Job, Gray is a guy who hasn’t received nearly as much notoriety as he has deserved over the years. However, if this film ends up being half as good as this trailer looks, hopefully that will change.

Straight Outta Compton hits theaters August 14, 2015.

After Notorious and Tupac resurection I’m on the verge of not giving an f about these biopics but this does look like it could buck the trend. Here’s hoping.
