Storytime Art Show Takes Pop Culture Icons and Makes Them Adorable

If you grew up in the United States at any point since the 1940s, then you are no doubt familiar with the Little Golden Books series. In fact, those skinny little books with the golden spines were probably among the first books you ever owned, back when you were a pre-schooler. I know that The Poky Little Puppy and The Little Red Caboose were the first books I ever read all by myself, after which I subsequently took my Crayola crayons and “improved” them (don’t judge me, you know you did the same!).

Now these wholesome pieces of Americana have been updated for the 21st Century by artist Joey Spiotto, who has taken the classic Little Golden Book art style and applied them to modern pop culture icons. He debuted his first batch of these in a series called Storytime last year, which featured cute Little Golden Book inspired versions of everything from Breaking Bad to Game of Thrones.  Now he’s following up that series with Storytime 2, which will be showing at Gallery 1988 East in Los Angeles, from November 6 through November 21.

Spiotto’s inspirations for Storytime 2 come from just about every avenue of popular culture, including actual children’s books characters like Willy Wonka, characters from movies like The Hunger Games, The Walking Dead, Aliens, The Dark Knight, Big Trouble in Little China, and a whole lot more. If I had to pick a favorite though, it would be Billy Mitchell, the real-life person who was the subject of the documentary The King of Kong. Runner-up would have to be Michael Jackson as Captain EO.
