While the majority of Star Wars fandom is wonderful and enthusiastic, the past couple of years have shown an ugly side of a certain segment of the fans. Apparently, a gross but very vocal part of the fanbase watched the original movies and somehow came away with the notion that the Empire (who, let us not forget, are basically Space Nazis) were the protagonists. They have spent the past 2 1/2 years hurling racist, sexist, and abusive comments towards members of the cast and crew of Star Wars, and it reached a tipping point recently when all this hate forced Kelly Marie Tran, who played Rose in The Last Jedi, to delete her Instagram account because of all the abuse.
Seeing how super not cool this is, celebrity geek Stephen Colbert decided to take on these awful trolls head on recently, when, on his show Late Night, (via io9) he decided to make up his own version of a Star Wars trailer. But this trailer was made to remind people how awesome the character of Rose is, and to call out all the awful “fans” and remind them that they are whiny, entitled man babies. You can see this awesome trailer above, where the Star Wars content begins at the 1:32 mark.
By the way, all of this is not to say that one must love The Last Jedi or any Disney Star Wars to be considered a “true fan.” But the minute your argument against it involves the words “SJW” and “forced diversity,” pretty much your entire argument against the film evaporates and shows itself for what it really is–bigotry. Isn’t it high time that a fictional universe that has aliens and robots and all kids of strange beings in it be allowed to have humans that aren’t just white dudes?? We’re just sayin.’
What do you think of Colbert’s takedown? Be sure to let us know what you think of all this down below in the comments.
