Steampunk Maleficent Comes To The Magic Kingdom

The official Disney Parks Blog has revealed what will be the next float in the Disney Festival of Fantasy Parade at Magic Kingdom Park in Orlando: No doubt tying in to the upcoming live-action release starring Angelina Jolie, the float will be Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty as a giant steampunk-designed dragon. Stretching 35 feet in length and reaching 26 feet above the parade route, the Maleficent Dragon was created in partnership with Tony Award-winner Michael Curry, whose previous collaborations with Disney Parks have included the Tapestry of Nations parade at Epcot and Finding Nemo: The Musical at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park.

The Disney Festival of Fantasy Parade is Walt Disney World’s new celebration at Fantasyland,  which just underwent its first massive upgrade since the park opened. In this new parade, each of the floats appearing are meant to look like characters from Disney’s fantasy classics had a part in creating them, tying in to the newly upgraded area. No word yet on whether any of the other Disney Parks will be getting this parade, but we’re hopeful that Disneyland in California will have something similar on display for 2015, which is Disneyland’s 60th anniversary year.
