Starman is once again headed to movie theaters. No, not a film about the classic DC Comics hero (although that would make a great movie), but a remake of the 1984 cult film from writer/director John Carpenter. According to reports, Shawn Levy, the director behind the Night at the Museum franchise and the Hugh Jackman-starring Real Steel, has signed on to direct and produce a remake of Starman for Sony/Columbia Pictures. Arash Amel (Grace of Monaco) is writing the script.
The original film was a sci-fi romance that starred TRON‘s Jeff Bridges and Raiders of the Lost Ark‘s Karen Allen. Actor Michael Douglas, who produced the original film, will produce along with Levy. Bridges would ultimately get an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for the movie, a rare honor for sci-fi films at the time. In fact, it’s the only Oscar nomination for anything created by John Carpenter, crazy as that might sound.
The original movie was about an alien who comes to Earth after making contact with the Voyager space probe. Essentially living energy, he ends up impersonating a woman’s dead husband, and then the two go on a road trip evading government forces who seek to capture him. The movie was something of  minor hit when it came out back in the day, and ultimately spawned a sequel television show that picked up 15 years later. Though the show ended up developing a cult following, it only lasted for one season.
