What do you think about when you see a blank wall? Most of us hang art or shelves to decorate the empty spaces, but artist Alejandro Santell saw something else–potential, and also the galaxy far, far away. The industrial designer took a chalkboard and transported the plain black surface to the Star Wars universe by adding a X-wing. The chalk art was specifically inspired by the X-wings seen in teasers and trailers for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. I have no doubt Poe Dameron would happily take this for a spin.

Santell spent six hours creating the X-wing with chalk. He used blueprints for the T-65 X-wing starfighter and drew rough thumbnails before reproducing the sketches on a bigger scale. This gif shows how it came together line by line:

Chalk isn’t a new medium for Santell. He’s used his talents to add fan art to blackboards before. Fan art like this drawing of the T-800 Terminator from Terminator 2:

You know, I don’t have access to a chalkboard, but I’m now tempted to cover one of my walls with chalkboard paint. Think about it. You could add new art all the time and just erase it whenever you want a change. The only small problem with this plan is that I can’t draw. Minor detail.
