STAR WARS Writer Gary Whitta to Adapt Mark Millar’s STARLIGHT

It looks like Mark Millar’s next comics to screen adaptation has found its writer: Gary Whitta has been tapped by Fox to adapt Millar’s 2013-2014 series Starlight for the big screen.

Whitta is a video game writer/narrative designer turned screenwriter, responsible for the script for the first Prey and most recently picked up the gig writing one of the standalone Star Wars films for Godzilla director Gareth Edwards. He was also responsible for the penultimate episode of Telltale Games’ The Walking Dead‘s first season which was pretty damned good.

Starlight is Millar’s stab at cosmic adventure comics (think Buck Rogers or Flash Gordon), albeit with a Millar-ian twist: 40 years ago, Duke McQueen saved the universe from an alien menace. But after coming home and raising his family, he’s been forgotten by the world. Alone and aimless, he’ll have to put on his suit one more time as a call from a distant planet forces him out of retirement. In a lot of ways, it sounds like a cosmic spin on Millar’s Old Man Logan arc, minus the incestuous Hulks.

The book ran for five issues at Image, with Millar on scripts and Goran Parlov (Punisher) on art. The fifth issue was released back in August. The final issue is scheduled to debut next month, according to Image.

Kick-Ass 2, based on the comic of the same name, was the last Millar project on the big screen. The Civil War and Ultimates writer’s next film will be the teen spy flick, Kingsman: The Secret Service with X-Men: First Class director Matthew Vaughn. X-Men: Days of Future Past producer and composer Simon Kinberg will be producing.
