Anything to do with Star Wars that is officially released by Lucasfilm is part of canon. Say it with me. That means comics, television series, books, and even mobile games. Unless it’s specifically labeled as not canon–which hasn’t happened yet–it’s all part of the same universe. That means the first trailer for the mobile game Star Wars: Uprising gives us our first look at the galaxy after Return of the Jedi. Yeah, it’s a little exciting.
We know post-Return of the Jedi stories are on the way. Marvel Comic’s Shattered Empire by Greg Rucka and Marco Chechetto will dive into events immediately following Episode VI. Del Rey’s Aftermath by Chuck Wendig will explore the time period too. But the comic and book aren’t here until September so the Star Wars: Uprising trailer is showing us new territoryâit only reveals hints of the state of the Rebel Alliance and the Empire but hints are more than nothing.
The trailer reveals a recorded message from Imperial Governor Adelhard; he’s telling citizens that the attack on the Death Star II failed and that rumors of Emperor Palpatine’s death are lies. While he speaks, a man who is presumably a rebel shows a recording of the Death Star II being blown to bits–proof that in one way, the Empire has fallen. It makes sense. It would likely take a visual like that to convince the average citizen who believed in the Empire.

Star Wars: Uprising takes place in the Anoat Sector, home to Hoth and Cloud City. It looks like gameplay will happen on those planets as well as Burnin Konn. The roleplaying game will allow players to build characters, choose alliances, and organize crews to fight in large battles. As mentioned, the central plot and the NPCs are canon. Commander Bragh is the Purge Trooper seen at the end of the trailer with the Imperial Governor, Riley is an orphan from Burnin Konn, and Deathstick (no, really) is a legendary assassin. You can read more about each character at the Star Wars: Uprising site. The mobile game is slated to be released in the fall.
I can’t wait to see whether any of these characters appear in the books and novels. The galaxy is big though, and this game seems smartly limited to one sector–I like the idea of seeing different planets and characters rather than the same ones.
And one more thing for fans of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Remember the twin sisters and Jedi Tiplar and Tiplee? They appeared in Season 6 of the animated series, and Tiplar was the unfortunate victim of the clone trooper Tup’s malfunctioning bio-chip (the chip that allowed Palpatine to make the clones execute Order 66). Tiplar and Tiplee were part of a new species that was never named, but when I saw the image for the Mikkian on the Star Wars: Uprising site (it’s part of a voting feature to determine in-game rewards), I couldn’t help but notice the similarities. Lucasfilm confirmed via Twitter that the sisters are indeed Mikkian.
Yes, I like knowing these things.
