STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII, Not FORCE AWAKENS, Shooting in Ireland

UPDATE: According to EW writer Anthony Breznican, Lucasfilm has denied the previous report, explaining that it’ll be Episode VIII—not The Force Awakens reshoots—that will take place in Ireland this month. Now they just have to tell us who’s going to star in it.

PREVIOUS: Did the force hit snooze, because filmmakers are waking it up again? Although we are just three months out from the highly anticipated release of Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, additional shooting is scheduled later this month in Ireland.

Entertainment Weekly is reporting that director J.J. Abrams will be doing some secondary filming off the southern coast of Ireland in Skellig Michael. They also report some small reshooting already took place last month at Disney’s D23 Expo.

The island was already used for filming last summer, and the same concerns about the ecological affect the movie may have on the environment there are again being addressed by officials. Known throughout the world of archaeology as the site of a well-preserved monastic outpost of the Early Christian period, the island is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.

With a December 18 release date fast approaching, it feels like it is very late in the game to have to do some re-shoots, but that information alone doesn’t necessarily portend anything negative. The reasons could as benign as the weather at the time wasn’t ideal and they want to leave no stone unturned.

How you feel about the newest Star Wars films in general will probably guide your reaction to this news. If you’re excited by the prospect of more Star Wars in your life you probably are glad they are working as hard as possible to get it right. If you still cringe about the prequels you might have script-problem fears.

We’ll keep our ears open if anything specific comes out about the need for the additional filming.

So what do you make of this? No big deal or something to worry about? Tell us you will your feelings in the comments, hmm?
