STAR WARS Reveals the Sentimental Origin of Rogue Squadron’s Name

One of the best things about new Star Wars content is how the Story Group fills in the white space around the films. Each new novel, comic, and television show adds to the tapestry of a galaxy far, far away to make it even more complex. Case in point, the most recent comic from Marvel, Star Wars #52. The issue from writer Kieron Gillen, artist Salvador Larroca, and colorist Guru Efx continues the series that picks up after A New Hope and the fall of the first Death Star. While the majority of this installment deals with showcasing Han Solo’s unparalleled flying skills as he fends off the entire Imperial Fleet and goes toe-to-toe in a dogfight with Darth Vader, Marvel snuck in a quick emotional gut punch in the form of Luke Skywalker naming his new team.

Rogue Squadron is named for Jyn Erso’s team who died heroically to save the galaxy in Rogue One. Just let that emotion wash over you.

And then, of course there’s the excitement of seeing the formation of Rogue Squadron, a group of pilots made popular in the Expanded Universe/Legends.

The moment comes as the Rebel fleet is mobilizing to defend itself in the aftermath of the Mutiny at Mon Cala. All hope seems lost as a double-agent within the Rebellion has given away the fleet’s position and the entire force of the Empire is barreling down on the scrappy rebels. Knowing it’s extremely possible he’s about to die, Luke takes strength from knowing Jyn Erso and the rest of Rogue One were brave in the face of certain doom and passes that homage on to his entire squadron.

Is anyone else getting a little verklempt or is it just me?
