Report: STAR WARS: ROGUE ONE to Film in 6K

Director J.J. Abrams is a well known proponent of film, and his upcoming movie, Star Wars: The Force Awakens used film instead of digital cameras. Director Gareth Edwards’ Star Wars anthology movie, Rogue One is expected to use film as well. But Rogue One is also taking a major step forward in digital filmmaking.

Reports are circulating that Star Wars: Rogue One will be shot using the Arri Alexa 65 6K camera which debuted last fall. The Alexa 65 6K camera is beyond any other digital camera currently available. You can’t even buy an Alexa 65 6K yet. All of the cameras are rented directly from Arri itself.

Mission Impossible 5, The Great Wall, and The Revenant all used the Alexa 65 6K camera during production, but not throughout the entire movie. It’s not clear how often the camera will be used during Rogue One, but it could possibly deliver previously unheard of resolution for the production.

Star Wars: Rogue One takes place shortly before the original Star Wars (Episode IV: A New Hope) as members of the Rebel Alliance come up with a plan to steal the plans for the Empire’s deadliest weapon: the Death Star.

Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything) is currently the only confirmed cast member of Star Wars: Rogue One, though Ben Mendelsohn, Diego Luna, and Sam Claflin have been rumored as well. Other roles in the cast are expected to be filled later this year, before production begins. Star Wars: Rogue One will be released on December 16, 2016.
