Meet STAR WARS’ Newest Droid in ‘BB-8: From Sketch to Screen’

“Where do you come from?” That’s the question posed by Rey to the newest droid in the Star Wars universe. And while he might have told her that information is classified, this behind the scenes featurette, “BB-8: From Sketch to Screen,” is here to give us the inside scoop.

We all have to start somewhere, and it turns out the round little droid from the galaxy far, far away started off as a sketch director J.J. Abrams drew on a napkin. If it seems like there is a life and energy to BB-8 that just feels right, there’s a reason for that.

“There was a feeling when I was a kid when I saw Star Wars for the first time that it was all practical and real. And seeing C-3PO and R2 there was no doubt it was a physical, tangible, real thing. You knew it when you saw the movie. So I felt that it was really important that we make BB-8 as real as possible,” said Abrams.

This video — which includes some sketches and shots of the soccer ball-like robot during his construction — also has thoughts from Ridley, as well as fellow The Force Awakens cast members John Boyega and Oscar Isaac, about what it was like to work with the “charismatic” and “feisty” robot.

“I’m starting to wonder whether R2-D2’s a distant cousin,” said Boyega.

“I would challenge anyone not to love BB-8,” said Ridley.

We’re not accepting that one.
