STAR WARS Meets MAD MAX in This Mash-Up Trailer

Illustrator and visual effects artists Krishna Shenoi brings us a look at events that happened a long time ago, in a galaxy of fire and blood. In it, the bizarre wastelands of Mad Max: Fury Road are actually the deserts of Tatooine as the sleeper hit of this past Spring gets mixed together with the biggest franchise of all time, Star Wars.

Road Wars: The Imperator Strikes Back starts off quite simple enough, with the same opening as the theatrical trailer for the newest Mad Max film, but soon takes a turn for the awesome as X-wings are seen making low running sweeps over the desert landscape during one of Fury Road’s myriad chase sequences. From there, we are treated to TIE Fighter crashes, lightsaber battles, Darth Vader running the Citadel, and even a daring rescue by the Millennium Falcon as Shenoi flexes his visual editing muscles. Even the derelict Star Destroyer from The Force Awakens gets to make an appearance.

In other hands this video could come off being quite cheesy or easily fall apart, but Shenoi is able to maintain the frenetic pace of Mad Max’s original trailer as well as generate an organic sense to the Star Wars additions. Small touches, like reflecting the light of Furiosa’s lightsaber off of her face and eyes, make for a more convincing creation than just cutting scene from both movies together. This and other videos on his YouTube channel have proved his skill in an editing bay, but be sure to check out his other work on his website as well.
