Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is still a few months away, but in the meantime, Lucasfilm has unleashed the second episode of the fan-created Star Wars: Go Rogue stop-motion animated series!
The Go Rogue shorts uses the previously revealed Rogue One toys and action figures to great comedic effect, thanks to the talents of animators and directors Dan MacKenzie and Tucker Barrie, writer Kevin Ulrich, Tongal’s James DeJulio, and the rest of the creative team. In the first episode, Jyn Erso managed to steal the plans for the LEGO Death Star. When this episode picks up, the remaining stormtroopers are humorously attempting to build the Death Star without the plans as an exasperated Director Krennic looks on.
Also in this episode, Jyn finally realizes that Cassian Andor and K-2SO aren’t her enemies, before they join up with fellow Rebels: Chirrut Ãmwe and Baze Malbus. Unfortunately for them, the Imperial forces have someone big to throw at them: the massive Stormtrooper from JAKKS Pacific! It’s a moment that would never work in a Star Wars live-action film, but it was brilliantly realized here.
Of course, this is only the second part of a four-part adventure. The remaining two installments will be released later this month before the first round of Rogue One toys hit the shelves on September 30. Also on the 30th, fans can submit their own original Rogue One shorts at StarWars.com/GoRogue; while children ages 8 through 12 will have their own category of shorts at Disney.com/MyRogueStory. The shorts will be judged by a panel including Rogue One director Gareth Edwards, and the winners will be invited to a special Lucasfilm screening in San Francisco to watch Rogue One and their animated shorts on the big screen.
