Billy Dee Williams was one of the few major cast members from the original Star Wars trilogy who didn’t have a part in The Force Awakens. And while Rian Johnson considered bringing Williams back for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, he was ultimately left out of that film as well. Now, Williams may finally be reprising his role as Lando Calrissian for Star Wars: Episode IX.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Williams’ Star Wars homecoming has been confirmed, although Lucasfilm has yet to make an official comment on the report. Rumors about Williams’ return were sparked when the 81-year old actor revealed that he was on a new fitness regimen. Williams also canceled his upcoming appearance at a comic convention while citing a conflict with his movie schedule.
Williams originated the role of Lando in The Empire Strikes Back, before taking an even larger role in Return of the Jedi. Since then, Williams has occasionally reprised his iconic part, most recently by voicing the character in Star Wars Rebels. Donald Glover portrayed a younger version of Lando in Solo: A Star Wars Story earlier this year.
In the aftermath of The Last Jedi, Lando’s return makes sense within the larger narrative. It’s unclear if Lando was involved with General Leia’s Resistance, but the final fates of Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, and likely Leia herself will probably provide Lando the motivation he needs to once again accept a leadership role. That’s just speculation for now, but we’re eager to see how Lando’s new story plays out.
Star Wars: Episode IX will begin filming this summer, and it will be released on December 20, 2019.
