Original Story:
One aspect of Star Wars fandom that I love (though sometimes shake my head at) is the obsession with background characters. The world is populated with all sorts of strange and interesting denizens. The fact that characters like the aliens from the cantina were represented early on in the form of action figures probably contributed to a certain level of fascination. If you a character joins in on the adventures on your living room floor, you become more curious about them. Now, there’s a new book on the way for those who are just as background character-focused as I am: Star Wars: From a Certain Point of View.
StarWars.com announced Del Rey Books is releasing the book, an anthology that collects 40 short stories, in celebration of the 40th anniversary of Star Wars: A New Hope. Hitting shelves in October 2017, From a Certain Point of View will feature over 40 authors. You’re sensing the theme by now, right?
Each short story is set during Episode IV. The certain points of view are unique because they’re from characters we’ve seen but never heard from before. We’ll learn what various events in A New Hope are like from the eyes of X-wing pilots that fought in the Battle of Yavin, stormtroopers, and more.
And can I just point out that one of the stories is by EK Johnston and Ashley Eckstein? I’m not saying it’s an Ahsoka Tano story, but Eckstein did voice the character and Johnston did write the Ahsoka novel, so my eyebrows are raised. Other participating authors include Paul Dini, Ben Acker and Ben Blacker (host of The Writers Panel, no big deal), Chuck Wendig, Gary Whitta, and many more.
Which character do you hope we’ll hear from in From a Certain Point of View? I’m keeping my fingers crossed for Ponda Baba. Tell me your picks in the comments.
