STAR WARS AFTERMATH: LIFE DEBT Will Reveal More About Maz Kanata

Star Wars fans will soon learn more about Maz Kanata, one of the breakout characters from The Force Awakens! Maz will be featured in the upcoming novel, Star Wars Aftermath: Life Debt, the sequel to author Chuck Wendig‘s Star Wars Aftermath novel that was released last year.

Wendig returned for Aftermath: Life Debt, and USA Today has posted a brief excerpt from Maz’s appearance in the book. Specifically, the passage illustrates some of the policies of Maz’s castle and reveals that she had a much deeper role in the underworld than the film implied. The excerpt also notes that there are thousands of unofficial rules at Maz’s castle, “but there’s only one spoken rule — written, too, in a hundred languages (many of them long-forgotten) on the wall beyond the bar: ALL ARE WELCOME. (NO FIGHTING.)” In the film, the only rule mentioned by Han Solo was to not stare at anything.

What’s left unsaid in the excerpt is how Maz enforces her rules. But it seems to be a safe assumption that Maz can back up her demands with her own Force abilities. Did you notice that Maz didn’t seem to have any bouncers or security in her castle when you were watching The Force Awakens? Maybe she doesn’t need them. J.J. Abrams has also indicated that one of the lost scenes from the film featured Maz using the Force against the invading soldiers of the First Order.

Even without that scene, the first time that Maz appeared onscreen seemed to hint that she has power. Maz realized that Han had entered the castle even before she turned around and shouted his name.

Star Wars Aftermath: Life Debt will be released this Tuesday, July 12.

How do you think that Maz enforces her rules at the castle? Share your theories in the comment section below!
