The Force Is With This STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE Anime Fan Trailer

It’s fair to say that the original Star Wars: A New Hope is maybe the most influential movie of the last fifty years. Among the many different types of movies that have drawn inspiration from George Lucas’ 1977 classic, a great deal of sci-fi anime has been heavily influenced, from the space battles in Macross/Robotech, to Gundam, to Cowboy Bebop, Lucas’ fingerprints can be found all over these beloved properties. Now, via Tastefully Offensive, we’e learned of one fan who has recreated the trailer for A New Hope in anime style, and the results will make you wish this were a real film hitting theaters.

The creator of this trailer is a Russian artist and animator Dmitry Grozov, who goes by “Ahriman.” The trailer gives us all the iconic shots from the original movie that you’d expect to see: Luke Skywalker watching the binary sunset on his homeworld of Tatooine, the Mos Eisley cantina, Han Solo’s introduction, the TIE fighter battle as the Millennium Falcon escapes the Death Star, Darth Vader’s final lightsaber battle with Obi-Wan Kenobi, the final X-Wing attack on the Death Star trench, all lovingly recreated.

If anything, this trailer serves to remind us all how truly iconic A New Hope really is. How many other movies in history can boast that nearly every single frame of this film is instantly recognizable and iconic? Perhaps The Wizard of Oz and a handful of others, but that list is not long. Inevitably, Disney will one day attempt to remake A New Hope, whether we want them to or not, and maybe the only way we’d all be OK with that is if it were a full length anime version, similar to what this trailer has shown us. There have been Star Wars manga adaptations, so why not anime too? We say go for it, Lucasfilm!
