One of the most iconic things about Star Trek, in all its incarnations, has always been its amazing theme music. From Alexander Courage’s original theme song, to Jerry Goldsmith’s fanfare for Star Trek: The Motion Picture (which was later recycled as the theme music to Star Trek: The Next Generation), all the way to Michael Giacchino’s score for the most recent J.J. Abrams films, just about every entry in the Star Trek franchise has had incredible musical scores to go along with it.
(Well, except for Star Trek:Â Enterprise and that Rod Stewart cover songâunsure what anyone was thinking with that one.)
Now with Star Trek: Discovery nearly upon us, we are finally getting to hear a bit of the latest theme song for the new show. Thanks to this new behind-the-scenes video, which you can watch down below, composer Jeff Russo leads a 60-piece orchestra in recording the theme for the first new Trek series in over twelve years.
The new theme music starts with more than a little bit of a hint of Alexander Courageâs original Star Trek theme, which is absolutely a sign they are going in the right direction. It also can’t hurt that one of the sound engineers is wearing Vulcan ears and a Starfleet uniform.
While Jeff Russo isn’t that well known of a name, his resume includes shows like Fargo, Shameless and Castle. And I should remind Star Trek fans that when the late, great James Horner wrote the score for Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, he was practically an unknown, and that went on to be one of Star Trek’s finest scores, and Horner went on to be one of Hollywood’s best composers. So you never know from whom an iconic score will come from.
Star Trek: Discovery debuts on CBS and CBS All Access September 24.
