Preview STAR TREK: DISCOVERY’S Soaring Soundtrack (Exclusive)

2017 saw the long-awaited and much anticipated return of Star Trek to our television screens with Star Trek: Discovery on CBS All Access. One of the many great things about this new series, especially as opposed to the last Star Trek series that aired on television, Star Trek: Enterprise, is its soaring theme music from composer Jeff Russo. While Enterprise’s theme music was a cheesy cover of a Rod Stewart song, Discovery’s theme brought us back to the soaring sense of adventure of all the previous series in the Trek canon. It reminded us all of why we love this franchise so much in the first place.

Now the folks at Lakeshore Records are easing our Discovery season one hiatus blues by releasing Jeff Russo’s score for the series. The soundtrack will contain twenty-one tracks from the show’s earliest episodes. The Star Trek: Discovery soundtrack will be available digitally on this December, and then will become available on CD and vinyl for all you collectors out there early in 2018. You can hear a preview of the score in the video above.

In a statement, Discovery producer Alex Kurtzman said the following about Russo’s score:

“Grand, glorious, hopeful, heartbreaking, intimate, bittersweet, tense, soaring, surprising. Over 51 years, in its many iterations, there’s been no shortage of adjectives to describe the music of Star Trek. On the other hand, the list of composers capable of capturing them all is short, and this is where Jeff Russo comes in. Jeff manages to hold each note in beautiful balance, evoking the nostalgia of Alexander Courage’s original theme while scoring Discovery with his own unique ear and heart. We’re lucky to have him, and we hope you’ll love his music as much as we do.”

The Star Trek: Discovery soundtrack will be available digitally starting on December 15.

What do you think of Russo’s score for Discovery? And how does it rank compared to other classic Trek scores? Let us know down below in the comments.
