Ever wonder what The Golden Girls theme song might have sounded like if, in the show’s finale, all four of its golden gals had disappeared in some ghostly Black Lodge-like dream? Thanks to Annie Clark (aka St. Vincent), now we know.

Over the weekend, the enigmatic songwriter made good on an earlier Twitter tease that she had refashioned The Golden Girls‘ sunshine-drizzled theme into a “dirge”—as Pitchfork reports.

St. Vincent’s tweet includes the iconic catchphrase “thank you for being a friend,” but there are no words to be found in her song. And, considering that the two-minute cover is essentially one long drone of ambient harmony, the Tweet feels more eulogy than anything. I’m not alone there; as one Twitter user responded to St. Vincent: “you scared me i thought betty white had died.” Thankfully, unless Clark knows something we don’t, White is 94 years old and still alive and well.

All that said, this cover is definitely better fit for a Lars Von Trier film than a TV sitcom about four hilarious old women that share a home in Miami. (And, to be fair, St. Vincent did write and direct a horror film.) Check out the original theme below and then compare it to St. Vincent’s theme here.

Clark isn’t the only one getting in on The Golden Girls action. Back in February, Animal Collective shared a track called “Golden Gal” that sampled the opening seconds of a 1985 episode called, “Rose the Prude.”
