St. Vincent Has Written and Directed a Horror Film

Are you ready for St. Vincent‘s freaky dream? Annie Clark, the guitarist and songwriter better known by her musical alias, has contributed a horror film to an anthology titled XX, which is being billed as “four deadly tales by four killer women.”

The series from XYZ films features four films written and directed by prominent women, among whom are Karyn Kusama (Jennifer’s Body), Mary Harron (American Psycho), Jennifer Lynch (Boxing Helena), and Jovanka Vuckovic (The Guest). Before St. Vincent tweeted official confirmation about the project, Kusama appeared on Geek Nation’s Killer POV podcast to discuss the project.

“There are overriding anxieties about female-ness to a degree,” Kusama explained during the interview. “And I want to say body horror is a component.”

The concept of “body horror” is something St. Vincent’s music has also explored in myriad ways in the past. Consider songs like “Surgeon” and “Birth in Reverse,” or her fucking creepy music video for “Cruel.” Clark’s exploration of horror has always been understated—the psychologically jarring kind that worms its way into your psyche and makes you question the version of reality you really inhabit. These themes seem like like they will translate beautifully into film, where she can project her striking aesthetic onto the silver screen. Clark’s segment for the anthology is slated to film this spring and will be cowritten by Roxanne Benjamin.
