Spyro the Dragon was the first game I obsessed over as a kid, the one in which I invested the most hours this side of Super Mario RPG. So when Activision and Toys for Bob announced theyâd be remastering the Spyro trilogy, I was psyched. If any series deserves revisiting and revamping, itâs this one, and a revamp is exactly what weâre getting with Spyro Reignited Trilogy. The original gamesâ visuals were dazzling at the time, but always a little dizzying (not that Iâd let that interrupt my marathon sessions), and seeing them redone in glorious HD is, well, glorious.
I had the privilege of catching the Reignited panel at SDCC over the summer, and the excitement among the panelists (including Tom Kenny, whoâs reprising the role of Spyro after successful turns in Riptoâs Rage! and Year of the Dragon, and Stewart Copeland, the seriesâ composer) was palpable.
The partnership between Activision, the original Spyro developer, and Toys for Bob, who brought the gamesâ visuals up to speed, seemed strong enough that I wouldnât be surprised to see more remastering from the studios in the future. And, given this trailer, thatâs certainly something to hope for.
The animation here is gorgeous. Iâm particularly impressed by how much smoother Spyro looks when he flies (and my fingers are twitching just thinking about passing through those bonus hoops and smashing open those dragons), and Spyro is, naturally, as quippy as ever. Iâd expect nothing less.
Spyro Reignited Trilogy will be available on PS4 and Xbox One on November 13.
