Doctor Strange will be hitting theaters in a week and it doesn’t take a master’s degree in the mystic arts to know the film is looking pretty darn good. That’s because the reviews have just started trickling in and by and large they’re overwhelmingly positive. In fact the film currently holds the highest Rotten Tomatoes Rating of any MCU movie to date with a whopping 96%. But if you’re on the fence about seeing The Sorcerer Supreme’s big screen debut and you still want to avoid spoilers, don’t worry. We’ve read all of the reviews for you (and wrote one of our own!) and now we’re going to break them down, totally spoiler free.
If there’s one thing all critics agree on about Doctor Strange it’s that the visuals are the real magic act. âMind-bendingâ âeye poppingâ and âSalvador DalÃ’s wettest dreamâ are just a few of phrases used to  describe director Scott Derricksonâs depiction of the Marvel Multiverse. A number of critics have even gone so far as to suggest that Doctor Strange would be best enjoyed with a little medical assistance. Jenny Yamato at the Daily Beast calls it; âthe first blockbuster of the modern superhero era ideally viewed on a magic mushroom trip.â
âClassyâ seems to be the big defining word when it comes to the cast of Doctor Strange, with a lot of critics calling out special appreciation for all the a-list thespians who took an astral detour into the MCU. USA Today says Tilda Swinton âadds sass, emotional depth and a little frailty to the wise-warrior archetypeâ in her portrayal of The Ancient One, and Empire says Benedict Cumberbatch âdemonstrates an easy charm⦠and a wry sense of humourâ in the title role of Doctor Strange.
But if thereâs one element that could have used a little more mental energy, itâs the script. More than one went so far as to describe Doctor Strange as an Iron Man remake, with witchcraft and wizardry swapped in for weaponized super suits. But even then, not many of them took too big of an issue with it. âDoctor Strange is basically a reboot of Iron Manâ says Mike Ryan at Uproxx âonly with a lot more prettier things to look at while you’re stoned. it’s a good strategy. and it worksâ.
So all in all, it seems like Doctor Strange is proving himself to be a pretty worth addition to the MCU. But what do you think? Did these reviews help change your future?
