Splitting Ten Decks of Cards with a Hydraulic Press is Incredibly Satisfying to Watch

It’s not hard to understand what makes the great YouTube account the Hydraulic Press Channel so appealing. You put things under a powerful machine, hit the start button, and watch as a myriad of objects get smashed, flattened, and demolished to smithereens. But it turns out that glorious device of destruction can do so much more, because watching it split ten decks of cards is far more satisfying than watching them get crushed.

The latest video from our favorite Finn Lauri Vuohensilta builds off an older one where he sliced one deck of cards. It was so much fun watching them fly off in all direction he decided to make it ten times better, and there’s something strangely hypnotic and comforting about the sound they make as they go careening through the air. As were the post-it-notes he needed to use to blunt the machine’s sharpness first.

I’m not a huge opera fan, but I could sit through a three-hour show if the entire time a hydraulic press was splitting playing cards in half. As for the rest of the objects he sliced up here, most were underwhelming—save for the explosive CO2 cartridges.

We don’t recommend you doing that yourself because it’s so dangerous, but we can’t deny that if you’ve made a mess of your hydraulic press by cutting up 520 playing cards, it’s a really efficient way to clear away the mess.

That machine really can do a lot.
