Sony Expands Spider-Verse with a SPIDER-WOMAN Animated Film

With the excitement around Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse growing, Sony has announced a new film meant to expand their animated Spider-Man universe. According to a report at The Hollywood Reporter, the studio is working on an all-female animated Spider-Women film that is reportedly going to focus on three generations of women with Spidey powers. Bek Smith will pen the screenplay for the spin-off. One of the characters included could be Spider-Gwen, also known as Ghost-Spider, a character who will appear in Into The Spider-Verse.

The same producing team behind Into The Spider-Verse look to be back for this one, including Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. Lauren Montgomery, who has directed many episodes of Voltron and the animated Wonder Woman film from 2009, is said to be in talks to direct.

Who will the three women in the potential Spider-Women movie be? Several characters from across years of Marvel stories could fit the bill. The original Spider-Woman is Jessica Drew, a mainstay of the Avengers, who is rumored to have an appearance in Spider-Man: Far From Home next year. But there is also Martha “Mattie” Franklin, Julia Carpenter, Silk, and Spider-Girl, who is Peter Parker and Mary Jane’s daughter from the future. We think they may have a hard time limiting it to just three iterations of the character.

In addition to the Spider-Women spinoff, Sony’s reportedly moving forward with a sequel to Into the Spider-Verse (arriving to theaters on December 14).
