SPIDER-MAN, JUMANJI Reboots Get New Release Dates

Now that we have our reboots on, it’s time to do the movie-release-date shuffle!

Sony has just announced that two of its tentpole films for 2017, the reboots for Spider-Man and Jumanji, are receiving new release dates. Spider-Man, which was previously slated for July 28, will now come out on July 7, and Jumanji will stampede into theaters on Spidy’s original release date (the 28th), pushed back from its earlier Christmas Day 2016 slot.

The Spider-Man reboot stars (still teenaged!) Tom Holland (In the Heart of the Sea, Locke), and will focus more on Spidy’s high-school years compared to the previous films starring either Tobey Maguire or Andrew Garfield. It will be directed by Jon Watts (Clown, Cop Car), and Aunt May will be portrayed by none other than Academy Award-winning actress Marisa Tomei. Although Holland will be the third actor to portray Spidey on the big screen, his reincarnation will be the first to debut in another film first; Captain America: Civil War, which is, according to Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn, “one of the best Marvel movies ever.”

The Jumanji reboot—the original was the eponymous 1995 film starring Robin Williams—will be helmed by veteran director Jake Kasdan (Sex Tape, Bad Teacher, Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story) and written by Scott Rosenberg, whose lengthy list of writing credits includes, among others, Con Air, Gone in 60 Seconds, and Kangaroo Jack. And although Kasdan and Rosenberg may look to the 1995 original for inspiration, it could be a completely new take on Chris Van Allsburg’s book, as the first film and the novel on which it was based differed in fundamental ways.

Now that new release dates have been announced, all we can do is wait to see how these fresh takes on two beloved originals turn out. Luckily, with films like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Deadpool, and Suicide Squad, we have plenty of action to tide us over until 2017.

What do you think about the new release dates for these reboots? Are you more excited for the web slinger’s return, or the game that thinks you rolled? Let us know in the comments section below!
