SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING Star Zendaya on Whether She’s Playing Mary Jane

Marvel’s Spider-Man reboot is pulling out all the stops, and spinning a web bigger than any prior Spidey screen incarnation. At least that’s what Spider-Man: Homecoming stars Tom Holland and Zendaya would have us believe in today’s Movie Morsels. We also have the latest info on the future of the Avengers films, a look ahead at a third Deadpool franchise, and even some news on a couple of films that don’t feature Marvel characters!

“The Mystery of the Missing Mary Jane” deepens… Though Zendaya’s character in the next Spider-Man movie has so far been referred to as “Michelle,” plenty of us are still wondering (and hoping) that the actress’ role will actually be revealed as that of the love of Spidey’s life, Mary Jane Watson. Zendaya herself gave her two cents on the subject in a new interview in The Hollywood Reporter, in which she was asked how she feels about the “fan controversy” surrounding an African-American Mary Jane…

“People are going to react over anything. But nothing [about who she is playing] is fact. It’s like, you guys are just making shit up at this point and then reacting to it. Whenever we were on set, one of us gets some random character name [on the call sheet]. [Bloggers were] like, ‘Oh they must be so and so.’ And we just crack up about it, because it’s like, ‘Whatever you want to think. You’ll find out.’ It’s funny to watch the guessing game. But of course there’s going to be outrage over that because for some reason some people just aren’t ready. I’m like, ‘I don’t know what America you live in, but from what I see when I walk outside my streets of New York right now, I see lots of diversity and I see the real world and it’s beautiful, and that’s what should be reflected and that’s what is reflected so you’re just going to have to get over it.'”

As for whether or not her character is romantically involved with Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Homecoming, Zendaya added…

“No [laughs]. My character is not romantic. My character is like very dry, awkward, intellectual and because she’s so smart, she just feels like she doesn’t need to talk to people, like ‘My brain is so far ahead of you that you’re just not really on my level.’ So she comes off very weird. But to me, she is very cool because she’s deep. She’s always thinking about something, always reading. I like that. And I also like that I don’t really have to do anything for hair and makeup. I just get to walk in and walk out.”

Avengers: Infinity War

Kevin Feige also hinted to The Toronto Sun that the fourth Avengers movie (the as yet untitled follow-up to Avengers: Infinity War) will play such a big role in Marvel’s three untitled 2020 releases (arriving on May 1st, July 10th, and November 6th) that he can’t even give their titles without revealing at least some of what happens in Avengers 4…

Where we go after Avengers,” said Feige, “what those 2020 films are, we’re pretty sure what those are going to be… but if I tell you that, we’re getting into spoilers.”

This of course leads us to wonder once more if some heroes could die in the fourth Avengers film, and be replaced, or succeeded, by new characters featured in the three mystery movies. Could a Captain America: Sam Wilson be far off? Hmmm…

Deadpool 3

And in another, very different corner of the Marvel Comics world… We’ve known for some time that the sequel to this year’s megahit Deadpool will star X-Force members Cable and Domino. But now The Hollywood Reporter has learned that the rest of the mutant team will appear in the already planned third Deadpool film. An X-Force solo film has been in development at Fox, but it now seems that this will become a part of  the Merc with a Mouth’s franchise.

Pacific Rim 2

Finally today, it’s official! The title of Pacific Rim 2 has finally been confirmed as Pacific Rim: Maelstrom. How do we know this? Because the sequel has at long last began production, as revealed in an Instagram post from star John Boyega, featuring his copy of the script…
