SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING Getting a Prequel Comic

As much as we loved Tom Holland‘s Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War, it was an unusual way to introduce the new Spidey to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Ahead of next year’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, Marvel is giving Peter Parker’s alter ego an expanded backstory in the medium where it all began.

Via CinemaBlend, Marvel has advance solicited a trade paperback for Spider-Man: Homecoming Prelude, which will include two issues, plus some bonus content that is likely to be a classic issue of the original Amazing Spider-Man series. The release date for the Spider-Man: Homecoming Prelude trade is in June 2017, but it will be available digitally and as separate issues in comic stores before that. The creative team has not yet been announced.

It’s not clear if the Spider-Man: Homecoming Prelude will also steer clear of the origin story that we’ve seen so many times before. But even the brief scenes between Peter Parker and Tony Stark in Civil War may offer a clue about what to expect. In that sequence, fans got their first glimpse of Spidey in a very crude, homemade outfit as he attempted to save lives and stop bad guys. That would make for some unique tales of a very inexperienced Spider-Man.

Alternately, the prelude comics could fill the gap between Civil War and Homecoming by further exploring Spider-Man’s education as a crime fighter, and his cool new suit, courtesy of Tony Stark. We’re eager to see the approach Marvel takes with the comic, and we should know more in a few months.
