On June 8th, 1984, we first found out who we were gonna call when there was something strange in the neighborhood, because that’s when the original Ghostbusters came to theaters. With the franchise all set for its reboot this summer, Sony has announced a nationwide celebration next week that will bring the original cast together along with the franchise’s newest stars as part of a giant Ghostbusters Day celebration. It’s a paranormal party that will include a nationwide showing of the 1984 film, with a sneak preview of the new female-led entry into the franchise, along with lots of other fun events and contests.
The June 8th activities will be highlighted by the original cast (Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, and Annie Potts–sadly Harold Ramis passed away in 2014) and the new, Ghostbusters (Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones) all appearing together on Jimmy Kimmel Live to discuss all things related to fighting ghosts.
However, that’s only a part of the party Sony has planned. Fathom Events will show a sneak preview of the new Paul Feig directed reboot as part of their nationwide, 800 theater screening of the original film (which you can also see on June 12th).
Some of the theaters participating will also run contests for fans. Cinemark is having a social media contest to give away ten signed posters for the new film, via their new app-based loyalty program. And members of Regal Cinemas Crown Club will be entered for a chance to win a trip to the new Ghostbusters film premiere in Los Angeles, including a $2500 gift card for travel and accommodations, just by buying a ticket to the movie.
However, the coolest event will be taking place right in New York City, where in Brooklyn BBQ Films will have “the worldâs only official immersive screening of the classic Ghostbusters–a transportive experience built around the classic movie called Ghostbusters HQ,” which they are describing as “a 360-degree interactive experience.”
Any of you lucky enough to attend that will also be the first ones to try the new Ghostbusters console game, Ghostbusters: Slime City from Activision. You’ll also get to film your own “unique spectral encounters,” and sip on some Hi-C Ecto Cooler. You can go to BBQFilms.com for more details about how to get tickets.
For some of the other activities Sony has planned you’ll need to keep an eye out on social media, because they say there will be a chance to get a ride in the Ecto-1, with some national and local appearances, but it’s not entirely sure what or where that may mean. Even if you don’t get a chance to do that they’ll be running a “Ghostbusters Twitter Mission Sweepstakes” to give away some more prizes, which include custom uniforms (that’s what you call a “must-need”). They’ll be giving away prizes (@Ghostbusters) for the weeks leading up to the July 15th release of the new film.
Finally, they also shared Elle King’s song from the new film’s soundtrack, “Good Girls,” which you can listen to right here.
If you are upset about this new film or don’t want to see it, for whatever reason, that’s fine, but some of us want this movie to be good because we love Ghostbusters, not in spite of that love, and having it back in our lives is a good thing. So for those of you that feel the same, the party starts next week, June 8th, and hopefully keeps going for the rest of the summer.
