Sony is Developing an Animated GHOSTBUSTERS Movie

Next year, director Paul Feig’s all-female Ghostbusters will hit theaters with Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones as the next generation of the team in a completely rebooted franchise. But they won’t have the franchise to themselves for long.

According to an exclusive at The Tracking Board, Sony is reportedly planning to make an animated Ghostbusters film that will once again feature an all-male cast of scientists who create new technology to combat and capture the ghosts haunting Manhattan. However, the animated Ghostbusters movie is said to be geared towards a much younger audience than Feig’s film, in the hopes of creating new Ghostbusters fans for the inevitable sequels.

The new Ghostbusters animated film is being produced by Ivan Reitman and Tom Pollock of Montecito Picture Company, with Sony Pictures Animation’s Ali Bell and Kristine Belson. Sony had previously indicated that another live-action Ghostbusters movie with an all-male cast was also in the works, but Reitman denied that report earlier this year.

Back in 1986, The Real Ghostbusters animated series was wildly successful on ABC and in syndication, with 140 episodes across seven seasons before the show came to an end in 1991. (The word “Real” was added to the title because Filmation had previously created an unrelated live-action series called The Ghost Busters in 1975. Filmation even had its own Ghost Busters animated series in ‘86, but it only ran for a single season.)

In 1997, the Extreme Ghostbusters animated series debuted as a direct follow-up to The Real Ghostbusters with an all-new team joining Egon Spengler and Janine Melnitz from the original series. However, Extreme Ghostbusters failed to catch on and it also ended after a single season.

Feig’s live-action Ghostbusters will open on July 15, 2016, and it should serve as a good indicator of the public’s desire for more Ghostbusters movies. The animated Ghostbusters film doesn’t currently have a release date.
