SONIC BOOM: FIRE AND ICE Scores Release Date

If you’ve been waiting to hear news about when you’ll be able to play Sonic Boom: Fire and Ice, today is your day! Sega recently took to the 25th anniversary panel (dedicated to the infamous blue hedgehog) at SXSW 2016 to reveal that the game will be hitting the Nintendo 3DS on September 27, 2016.

The game was originally slated for a Fall 2015 release, but was pushed to 2016 (without a specific date pinned down) back in September. Like most delayed titles, Sega cited making sure “the game has the time and polish needed” before launch, stating that it would be bringing fans a much stronger title in the long run. Since then, however, the publisher has remained relatively quiet about the project.

For those who are unfamiliar with it, Sonic Boom: Fire and Ice is an action-adventure platformer developed by Sanzaru Games for the Nintendo 3DS. It is part of the Sonic Boom spin-off, which also includes Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric (Wii U), Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal (3DS), and the Sonic Boom television series.

While Rise of Lyric didn’t fare well with critics, Shattered Crystal had a slightly (emphasis on slightly) better go of things. Hopefully, the additional year Sanzaru Games has taken for development will make Fire and Ice better than its Wii U and 3DS predecessors. The previous two were widely criticized for unimaginative dialogue, and repetitive gameplay. We certainly hope things are better the third time around, because it’s a shame seeing our favorite hedgehog out of favor.
