It’s time to catch the last train, because Snowpiercer is coming to television! Tomorrow Studios has picked up the rights to adapt the Snowpiercer film as a TV series with screenwriter Josh Friedman. Both the Snowpiercer television show and movie were based on Le Transperceneige, a French graphic novel by Jacques Lob and Jean-Marc Rochette.
The premise for Snowpiercer is that the planet has been plunged into a new ice age, with the remnants of humanity gathered on a single train that travels the globe. But the 1000-car train is divided by class, with the rich enjoying a life of luxury in the front cars while the lower classes toil in the back. Inevitably, a rebellion is sparked as the lower classes push forward and seize control of the train cars. The 2013Â Snowpiercer movie was written and directed by Bong Joon-ho and stars Chris Evans and Tilda Swinton.
Bong is attached to executive produce the new television incarnation of Snowpiercer alongside Dooho Choi, Marty Adelstein, Becky Clements, and Chan-wook Park.
Prior to Snowpiecer, Friedman teamed up with James Cameron to write the Avatar sequels, and he also developed and created the Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles TV series. Additionally, Friedman wrote the Locke & Key pilot for Fox, and worked NBC’s pirate drama Crossbones as well as the upcoming Emerald City miniseries, which reimagines the Wizard of Oz mythos.
“I couldn’t be more excited for the opportunity,” Friedman said. “Marty [Adelstein] and Becky [Clements] are the perfect partners to help me bring this world to TV. I’m a huge fan of director Bong’s films, especially Snowpiercer. It’s great the way the best sci-fi is great — thoughtful, political, funny, scary and sly. And it’s on a train. A big f—ing train. What more could you want?”
There’s currently no network attached to the Snowpiercer TV show, but it will be shopped around in the near future.
