Martin Freeman, lovable star of the original BBC version of The Office, FX’s Fargo and The Hobbit trilogy took the stage to host Saturday Night Live with musical guest Charli XCX and did not disappoint. Freeman was funny and light in another strong episode coming on the heels of James Franco’s hosting duties last weekend. Let’s check out some of the highlights of the show!

Charlie Rose Cold Open

In one of the only overtly political sketches of the night, SNL made use of the cold open to discuss the newly released CIA report on torture. Taran Killam’s Charlie Rose interviewed the two psychologists who were paid $80M to design the torture program and they revealed that they’ve been instituting torture in everyday places for years!

Sump’n Claus

I loved this sketch but mostly because it was basically “What Up With That?” but with Santa Claus. Well, alright, maybe not quite, but it was still a lot of fun. It also solidified, as I’ve noticed throughout the season, that Keenan Thompson is one of the funniest and most dynamic cast members the show has, and if this season is indeed his last, it will be really sad to see him go.

The Office: Middle Earth

It wouldn’t be a Martin Freeman hosted episode without nods to the BBC iteration of The Office and The Hobbit so naturally we get The Office: Middle Earth! Join Gandalf, Gollum, Bilbo, and others as they navigate their everyday lives working for a paper company. We learn, ultimately, it is an awkward, dangerous quest to become Lord Of The Reams.

Right Side of the Bed

Perhaps this struck a chord with me because I am from Atlanta, so I grew up watching WSB-TV. Or maybe it struck a chord with me because I recently stumbled across this insane reality television show Chrisley Knows Best, which I would bet dollars to donuts that the Chisholm family in this sketch is based on, but “Right Side of the Bed” was endlessly amusing to me. For anyone who has suffered through anything on local access, this one is for you!

Weekend Update: Sasheer Zamata

Sasheer Zamata made an appearance on “Weekend Update” to discuss the lack of diversity in emojis. Zamata, who has been an excellent addition to the cast since she came on-board last season, was also the first hire Lorne Michaels made after he was heavily criticized last season for a lack of diversity in the cast after Kerry Washington handled hosting duties. I was expecting for her to have a joke about this somewhere in there, but it may have been a little too on the nose for Michaels to handle. In any case, she and “Update” co-anchor Michael Che weighed in on communicating the black experience via the bowling ball emoji.

Weekend Update: One-Dimensional Female Character from a Male Driven Comedy

As far as I’m concerned, this was everything. Presented without further comment, Cecily Strong is the One-Dimensional Female Character from a Male Driven Comedy.

Waterbed Commercial

Aidy Bryant once again steals the show as the wife of waterbed mogul Martin Freeman’s Dom and aspiring starlet featured in all of his Waterbed Warehouse commercials. Anyone know where we can score the Aidy Bryant bedspread in the show? Asking for a friend.
