SNL Recap: J.K. Simmons and D’Angelo

Academy Award nominee and favorite J. Jonah Jameson J.K. Simmons hosted a strong episode of Saturday Night Live last night as the sketch comedy show goes on hiatus until February 15 when the 40th anniversary special airs on NBC. With special appearances from SNL alum like Fred Armisen and Jason Sudeikis, let’s take a look at some of the highlights.

J.K. Simmons Monologue feat. Fred Armisen

Simmons, an Oscar nominee this year for his role in Whiplash, took to the stage to tell the audience that he’s not such a bad guy and that he and some of the cast even wrote a fun song to prove it. Things were off to a rocky start as Kyle Mooney couldn’t quite keep time to Simmons’ liking. Fortunately, former SNL player and Portlandia star Fred Armisen was there to step in and crush it in an incredible drum solo.

Totino’s Super Bowl Commercial

The condescending Super Bowl commercial to end all condescending Super Bowl commercials, Vanessa Bayer stars as the wife who lives to serve and in the meantime has a Super Bowl Activity Pack for Women to keep her occupied.

Casablanca

A “lost ending” has been unearthed for the Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman classic showing how things might have gone if Ilsa had realized that not getting on the plane probably meant she’d wind up in a concentration camp. Future Ghostbuster Kate McKinnon played the delightfully silly Bergman to Simmons’ Bogart.

Teacher Snow Day

It’s not just the students who love snow days as student Pete Davidson discovered in this hardcore rap parody featuring basically all of the cast in one way or another.

Weekend Update: One Dimensional Female Character on the Super Bowl

After a rough go of it last week, “Weekend Update” had a strong showing by bringing out two of their strongest reoccurring characters: One Dimensional Female Character From A Male-Driven Comedy and harshest critic in history Jebidiah Atkinson.

This week, One Dimensional Female Character From A Male-Driven Comedy (Cecily Strong) came by “Update” to not talk about the Super Bowl and lay some pretty serious news on co-anchor Colin Jost, who has really grown up recently…

Weekend Update: Jebidiah Atkinson Reviews the 2015 Grammy Nominations

Jebidiah Atkinson (Taran Killam) also appeared on “Update” to talk to Michael Che about this years Grammy nominees as well as popular musicians of the past. Spoiler Alert: he hates all of them.

The Jay-Z Story

In one of the most ridiculous sketches in a while, current SNL writer and former cast member Mike O’Brien played Jay-Z in the musical biopic to end all musical biopics. Other super white guys Jason Sudeikis and host J.K. Simmons played Kayne West and Nas, respectively, with Jay Pharoah playing Jay-Z’s best friend. It’s just as silly as it sounds. Watch below!

After a slow start to the new year, Simmons and company went out strong with SNL going on hiatus for the next few weeks until the 40th anniversary special which airs Sunday, February 15 on NBC.
