SNL Recap: Dwayne Johnson Returns with George Ezra

Saturday Night Live was back after a quick hiatus with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson hosting for the fourth time and musical guest George Ezra. They put The Rock to work right away, featuring him immediately in the cold open and in strong roles all the way through the night. Let’s highlight some of the best sketches from the most recent show!

The Rock Obama

The night started off with a cold open featuring Johnson as “The Rock Obama,” a version of President Obama that you wouldn’t like when he’s angry. He was later joined by “She Rock Obama” (played by Leslie Jones) who got some infuriating news about her beloved garden.

Dwayne Johnson’s Franchise Viagra Monologue

While Johnson is mostly known as an action star on the big screen, one of the best parts of when he hosts SNL is that he not only brings his funny side but he usually takes the opportunity to sing and dance, and last night was no exception. Joined by Kate McKinnon, Cecily Strong, Sasheer Zamata and Aidy Bryant, Johnson sang a cool tune about, what else? His strong resume as “franchise Viagra.”

New Disney Movie

As we all know, Disney has taken a liking to remaking their animated classics into live-action feature films. With the just released Cinderella seeing a huge opening weekend and live action Beauty and the Beast and Dumbo on its way, it would make sense that Disney might want to reimagine the sweet and tragic Bambi for a new audience as a high octane revenge flick starring Dwayne “The Rock” Jonson and future Oscar winner Vin Diesel.

Dinner Date

This was a bit that I can’t imagine where it came from in the writers room but Johnson, always committed no matter how silly, sells it alongside the delightful Cecily Strong. Of course The Rock would play a pervy bro with a tacky British girlfriend! Sure! Why not? Watch as they make another couple, Vanessa Bayer and Kenan Thompson, very uncomfortable.

Improv Show

I love this sketch because Kate McKinnon’s Robert Durst impression was absolutely perfect. Perfect! For some reason, Durst decided to take in an improv show and volunteer to have a sketch made about his life. Hot on his trail was decidedly glamorous District Attorney Jeanine Pirro (Cecily Strong). Johnson was absent from this one but fans of the HBO docu-series The Jinx will get a creepy good laugh.

Interrogation

This sketch on paper might seem completely goofy and totally strange but Johnson’s charm and enthusiasm made it a delightfully weird home run. Saved for the last live skit of the night, take a walk on the bizarre wild side with this one.

Did you all enjoy The Rock’s fourth foray into host territory? Tell us your thoughts on the show this week in the comments!

SNL has lined up their next two shows including Academy Award nominee Michael Keaton with musical guest Carly Rae Jepson next weekend, followed by Empire star Taraji P. Henson and Mumford & Sons.
