SNL 40 Deleted Video: Kyle Mooney Takes To The Streets

The Saturday Night Live 40th anniversary special was the ultimate celebration of comedy. Clocking in at three and a half hours and airing last Sunday night, SNL 40 featured bits, sketches and videos including everyone from Will Ferrell, Laraine Newman, Eddie Murphy, Martin Short, Maya Rudolph, Tina Fey, Jane Curtin, Amy Poehler and lots more.

Armed with a long microphone, a puffy red jacket and a dream, Saturday Night Live’s Kyle Mooney took to the streets to talk to everyday folks about the iconic comedy show in honor of its 40th anniversary. Mooney is known for his silly man-on-the-street interviews and talking to jaded New Yorkers about SNL was a perfect fit.

I kind of love everything about this video from the things people said about the show to the silly 90’s era graphics and editing. Most of all, I love this super awkward character that Mooney is playing so perfectly. It may have been cut from the final broadcast but you can watch it all unfold below!

I like Mooney a lot. He’s got all of the off-beat quirkiness of Will Forte but manages to be slightly more accessible. Mooney, part of the sketch comedy group and YouTube channel Good Neighbor, seems like a worthy successor to take over the Digital Short format that Andy Samberg and The Lonely Island reinvented during Samberg’s tenure on the show without being beholden to their style.

Saturday Night Live returns next Saturday, February 28 with star of 50 Shades of Grey Dakota Johnson as host and Alabama Shakes as musical guest.
