Despite our current love affair with nostalgia in popular culture, there were actually a lot of things about the ’80s that weren’t all that great. Shoulder pads. Everything having to be in neon. Punky Brewster. But there is simply no denying that the ’80s were a great time for two specific things: horror movies and pop music. Seriously, don’t even argue with us about this, because there’s no point.
Now there’s a brand new stage musical that finally combines these two things into one, and I for one say it’s long overdue.
Coming soon to Los Angeles is Slashed! The Musical, a musical comedy love-letter to the classic ’80ss summer camp slasher genre, which includes classics like Friday the 13th, The Burning, and Sleepaway Camp—movies that motivated an entire generation to stay inside during the summer.
The show features a cast of characters that you know and love (but with a twist!) and original songs inspired by 1980s Top 40 radio. Set in the year 1983, Slashed! will have audiences laughing and screaming from beginning until the very bloody end. For a taste of what’s to come, we’ve got an exclusive debut of this song from the musical: “Camp Doom.”
Slashed! tells the story of a handful of camp counselors getting ready for the grand re-opening of Camp Freedom (better known to the locals as CAMP DOOM) where, just a decade earlier, Little Peetie Jergins fell into a bonfire while the counselors were too busy drinking, dancing, smoking and screwing to pay attention to his screams. Now Peetieâs unquiet spirit roams the woods, punishing those who engage in the behaviors that lead to his demise. And soon, the lake will run red with the blood of his victims!
Slashed! The Musical is directed by Chelsea Stardust, with book, music & lyrics by Sean Keller. It was produced by Rudy Scalese and Clarke Wolfe, and choreographed by Rebekah McKendry. The show is running from June 4th through 23rd at the Los Angeles Fringe Festival, and you can get your tickets right here.
