Sing-Along in the Star Wars Cantina

In Star Wars, we only got a brief look inside the Mos Eisley spaceport cantina, but it is without a doubt one of the most memorable scenes in the entire saga. That’s where we met Han Solo, Chewbacca, those two irritable guys who Ben kills and nobody seems to care about, and a slew of other colorful, memorable creatures and characters we always wanted to spend more time with (and did thanks to the expanded universe). It is with this in mind that the Nerdist Channel brings you its newest video, shot entirely on Samsung Galaxy phones, no less.

In it, we see a typical night of karaoke led by Mike Phirman. As a certain Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams!) begins to sing a little ditty written by Jason Schwartzman, the familiar faces begin to join in. Also milling around are Han Solo (Chris Hardwick), Leia in her bounty hunter gear (Carrie Keagan), and the grumpy bartender (Patton Oswalt). Greedo even gets fried a couple of times; it’s like you’re actually there!

For some of the cast, being in a legendary location from the very first Star Wars movie is a dream come true. Keagan explains that the cantina scenes are why she fell in love with the franchise in the first place. “I always have a soft spot for the original original,” she says. “That’s the one I probably know the best. It’s like, when you go back and watch Rocky movies, what’s the one you think of most? IV is probably the best, but you remember 1, because 1 is the ONE!”

Schwartzman, who isn’t quite sure who he’s playing in the video (“My feeling is that I live around here. I don’t think I’m a pirate of any kind. I think I’m just a good person who drinks and hangs out at a bar that’s full of pirates.”) can’t think of a time when he didn’t know what Star Wars was. “It’s hard to think of the first time I saw any of them. It’s like a dollar bill. ‘When’s the first time you saw a dollar bill?’ I don’t know. They were always just there.”

Everyone pretty much agrees that Han Solo is the best character. Says Keagan, “Han Solo was the sexiest man alive. You couldn’t get any cooler or suaver than that. He was like every girl’s dream.” Schwartzman adds, “I like his type of hero, a good guy who gets in trouble quite a lot. I like that kind of character.” And Oswalt shares how his tastes have changed over time: “Growing up, it was Han Solo,” he says, “but as I got older it was Boba Fett and then Obi-Wan. It got more refined with age.”
