Simon Pegg Set to Co-Write STAR TREK 3

The last few months has been mostly troubling news coming from behind the scenes of next year’s Star Trek 3. First director Roberto Orci left the project, leaving the movie without a screenwriter or director. Not soon after, Fast and Furious‘ Justin Lin came on board to direct… but what about the script?

Well, in our first bit of good news regarding Star Trek 3 in a while, it appears that Chief Engineer Scott himself, Simon Pegg will be co-writing the movie, along with with Doug Jung, creator of the TNT series Dark Blue. Jung also wrote a movie for Bad Robot and Paramount called Diamond, which is how he he seems to have landed the job.

This is hardly Simon Pegg’s first time writing a screenplay, since he also co-wrote the Cornetto trilogy, Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World’s End, with Nick Frost and Edgar Wright (who was also rumored for the Star Trek 3 directing job himself, for about one hot minute). Pegg is a true nerd and hardcore sc-fi geek who grew up with Star Trek and Star Wars and knows them both inside and out. Plus, based on his previous projects, is an incredible screenwriter to boot. Beam us up, Scotty – we’re on board.

But what do you think of the news? Let us know in the comments below!

  1. JBK says:

I think having Mr. Pegg involved from the writing aspect should make for an entertaining story line. I’m curious to see how it is that he will manage to get Nick Frost in front of the camera–even for one tiny second. That will be a bit of masterful work, on his part–not to mention fun for those of us in the audience….!

  2. JetpackBlues says:

Why was this never a thing to begin with?

  3. PaladinPool619 says:

Looking forward to the new direction this is going. I liked the the reboots, thought they were mostly great sci-fi/action flicks but not great Star Trek flicks. Hopefully this one will actually be Star Trek. But probably not because they did bring in an action director. We’ll see.

  4. Greg1756 says:

I think Pegg being involved in the writing will keep the purity of Trek in place, much to what JJ Abrams achieved when he had the directorial helm.

  5. ErikMarie says:

Count me in (more so than before).

  6. Chad H says:

This actually makes me feel a lot better about the new movie.

    • eli says:

I agree. Simon being involved makes me feel very confident that it will be good, (not to mention funny)

  7. GuanoLad says:

Just for clarification, Nick Frost didn’t co-write ‘the Cornetto trilogy’, that was just Edgar and Simon. But Nick did co-write ‘Paul’ with Simon.

“I’m working on the script as fast as I can. captain. I don’t think she can take anymorrrrrre.”

      • IZinterrogator says:

But remember, Scott multiplied all repair times by four to seem to be a miracle worker.
