SHERLOCK Returns in January

The very long wait is finally over, almost. PBS’ Sherlock will be returning to our screens January 19th, 2014, nearly two years since “The Reichenbach Fall” ended with that “What the what?”-style cliffhanger, Entertainment Weekly reports. This means that the super sleuth show, which stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman (their involvement in The Hobbit is what added to the delay in a third series, along with executive producer/writer Steven Moffat’s Doctor Who commitment), will be shown here in the States back to back with Downton Abbey, which will begin airing its fourth season on January 5th.

The BBC has yet to announce its premiere of the season, but given that in the past, the US had to wait upwards of four months after the UK to see it, we’re bound to get it closer to them, since they’d have to start airing it right now for the gap to be the same.

As far as episode information, the EW article has this to say:

The first episode is called “The Empty Hearse” and solves the mystery of Sherlock’s death. The second episode is titled “The Sign of Three” and features — spoiler alert if you haven’t been following the online chatter about the new season — Watson getting married to Mary Morstan (played by his real-life partner, Mr. Selfridge actress Amanda Abbington). The third episode is “The Last Vow” and airs Feb. 2. And then the wait for new Sherlock will begin all over again. Season 4 is heavily presumed to be happening, but the BBC has not confirmed this and the company tends to wait until each season of Sherlock airs until announcing the next.

So, we’re very excited and can’t wait for those three weeks of crime-solving glory before we have to wait all over again. What do you think? How excited are you? Be sure to come back to Nerdist.com once the episodes air for recaps by yours truly. Until then? Read my reviews of the last three episodes: “A Scandal in Belgravia,” “The Hounds of Baskerville,” and “The Reichenbach Fall.” And enjoy the teaser from this summer.

Yeah, but each episode is 90 minutes long, so you’re basically getting 3 high-quality movies per season. I’m okay with that.
