First SHAZAM Teaser Shows a Fun, Lighthearted Turn for the DCEU

For those who have been hoping the DCEU would lighten up a little and have some fun instead of always being so gritty and (literally) dark, this year’s San Diego Comic-Con finally granted your wish. Warner Bros. released a trailer for a very different kind of superhero movie from the studio—one that, appropriately, magically transformed all adults into gleeful little kids. The first look at Shazam! feels like a callback to hopeful DC heroes of yore!

The film, which stars Asher Angel as the young Billy Batson and Zachary Levi as the supersized hero Shazam he transforms into, got its first teaser trailer at SDCC. There’s not much here in the way of plot, as it mostly focuses on Billy’s unlikely origin story, but the tone is definitely much more lighthearted and fun than we might have expected.

Uh…yeah! This feels like Big combined with the classic Christopher Reeve Superman movies, which is a pretty good formula. It also explains why those initial set photos showing Levi in his costume were nothing to worry about; the goofiness of his super suit perfectly fits the feel of the movie.

Whether or not this confirms that Warner Bros. is definitively moving away from the darker touch that defined the first three films in the franchise remains to be seen, but either way, this teaser has us feeling good. Shazam!, directed by David F. Sandberg, comes to theaters next spring, on April 5, 2019.
