Sharon Van Etten’s Song For Tig Notaro Is Beautiful

Tig Notaro’s Live is basically the Chicken Noodle Soup For The Soul of recorded standup sets. Recorded shortly after an endless onsluaght of personal tragedies (her mother’s death, a breakup, a breast-cancer diagnosis), the standup album transcends the format as an existential look at the absurdity of bad luck and the importance of moderate pessimism and optimism.

After that monumental set, directors Kristina Goolsby and Ashley York embarked on the documentary Tig, which begins the night of said set and follows the comedian throughout the next year as she endures and rebuilds. According to Vulture, Sharon Van Etten has a new song, “Words,” which plays at the end credits of the forthcoming documentary.

Long have we been fans of Sharon Van Etten and Tig Notaro, so it was such a pleasant surprise to find these two magnificent human beings interconnected for a common project. The song itself feels like a moving portrait of a person in convalescence. It is simple, a little bit rainy, and definitely aesthetically similar to Van Etten’s previous discography. I can imagine this working excellently in what I hope will be a poignant film. Tig debuts on Netflix this Friday, July 17.
