Five years ago, Square Enix rebooted Lara Croft with the start of a new trilogy of Tomb Raider games. Later this year, Lara’s origin will come to its conclusion in Shadow of the Tomb Raider. During Microsoft’s E3 2018 event, a new trailer for Lara’s next adventure was revealed as she traveled deep within a temple to retrieve a Mayan artifact. But if the new footage is any indication, Lara may have inadvertently set in motion an apocalyptic event that she won’t be able to stop on her own.
It appears that Lara will once again go up against the organization known as Trinity as she attempts to uncover answers. But even Lara admits that she doesn’t have all of the right questions to ask. What we do know is that Lara has triggered “the Cleansing” by removing a sacred knife from its resting place. Whatever happens next is her responsibility.
The new footage offers a few hints about the new puzzles awaiting Lara, as well as an escape down a rushing river that should be very familiar to fans of the first game in the reboot series. There’s also an enigmatic mask that Lara may wear at some point in the game, but it’s unclear how that will have an impact the gameplay.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider will be released on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on September 14. What do you think of the new trailer? Let us know in the comment section below!
