The Walt Disney Animation Studio’s features usually star princesses and focus on fairy tales, but they’re taking a different direction this fall. Disney is adapting Marvel’s Big Hero 6, and it’s the first animation from Disney to star characters from the Marvel Comics universe. It was only a matter of time. The premiere date is set for November 7, and Disney’s recently released the first official images from the film.
Big Hero 6 focuses on the story of a teenage boy and his robot. Hiro Hamada and his robot Baymax live in San Fransokyo, a mash-up of San Francisco and Tokyo. When Hiro finds himself caught up in a criminal plot he uses his smarts to transform Baymax into an armored combatant. He also pulls together a team of spirited not quite superheroes – Go Go Tamago, Wasabi No-Ginger, Honey Lemo and Fred – to help save the city.
Unsurprisingly, the animation stills look gorgeous. They show Baymax getting suited up, and there are plenty of details to examine in what looks like a workshop. You can spot a skateboard, tools, and equipment, and while that’s not exactly mind-blowing, the background details do show the care Disney puts into digital sets to make them look realistic and lived in.
Though it’s not immediately apparent from the images, co-director Don Hall told USA Today that the film based on the Marvel comic from the late ’90s does have anime influences. Perhaps we’ll see more of those influences in the first teaser for Big Hero 6 that will be released this Thursday, May 22.

The anime influences in those comics are as thin as a paper napkin. I expect the same depth from this film as well.
