See Pennywise’s Full, Horrifying Look from the New STEPHEN KING’S IT Movie

Last month, New Line Cinema teased the first look at Bill SkarsgÃ¥rd’s Pennywise from the upcoming remake of Stephen King’s It. Now, one of King’s most malevolent monsters stands revealed, and he’s pure nightmare fuel…especially if you were already afraid of clowns!

Entertainment Weekly posted several new images of SkarsgÃ¥rd as Pennywise, which costume designer Janie Bryant put together with elements from the “Medieval, Renaissance, Elizabethan, and Victorian eras.” Bryant told EW that “the costume definitely incorporates all these otherworldly past lives, if you will. He is definitely a clown from a different time.”

This version of Pennywise embraces a much darker color palette than the outfit that Tim Curry wore in the television adaptation of It back in 1990. For comparison’s sake, here’s a reminder of what Curry looked like in costume:

The thing to remember about Pennywise is that he isn’t really a clown at all, or even a person. This is just his preferred form to lure children to their doom. As established in King’s original novel, Pennywise’s killing spree went back several centuries, and the story also put forth the idea that Pennywise may have dated back to the earliest days of the universe itself.

Andrés Muschietti is directing the new cinematic adaptation of It, which will also star Jaeden Lieberher, Jeremy Ray Taylor, Sophia Lillis, Finn Wolfhard, Jack Dylan Grazer, Chosen Jacobs, and Wyatt Oleff as “The Losers Club,” a group of children who take it upon themselves to end Pennywise’s reign of terror.

Stephen King’s It will be released on September 8, 2017.
