The 4th has been good to us. Hot on the heels of news about Adam Driver and Lupita Nyong’o’s characters in Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens and Gwendoline Christie’s Captain Phasma comes confirmation about the second film in the newly christened Star Wars Anthology series (spotlighting stories just outside the main Skywalker-centric movie saga). Congratulations, Boba Fett fans — your favorite bounty hunter’s origin story will finally be told! The Wrap just confirmed that our favorite Mandalorian mercenary will be at the center of the 2018 release, which recently lost its director Josh Trank (who’s helming this summer’s Fantastic Four reboot). Not to brag, but you’ll recall that Nerdist News totally guessed Boba Fett would get his own movie.
Needless to say, Fett is a pretty interesting choice of subject matter for a Star Wars Anthology film. Since his first appearance in the only cool sequence in November 1978’s Star Wars Holiday Special, he’s become a huge favorite of fans (helped in no small measure by his famous non-rocket-firing mailaway action action from Kenner), and perhaps the saga’s single greatest cult figure. Plenty of Expanded Universe stories have been told of his exploits as a ruthless hired gun, though surprisingly little has been established within the Star Wars canon about his origins, beyond that which we saw in 2002’s Attack of the Clones, where we learned he was trained for a time by his adopted father Jango Fett before his decapitation at the lightsaber blade of Mace Windu.
Will the second Star Wars Anthology film give Boba Fett a new lease on life? Or is a large part of Fett’s allure due to the mystery that surrounds him? Let us know what you think below!
