Paramount has finally made its choice about who will direct the first JJ Abrams-less Star Trek. According to Variety, the studio has chosen screenwriter Robert Orci to take over for Abrams, who’s busy bringing the Empire back.
Orci, who got his start writing episodes of Xena: Warrior Princess and Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, is probably best known for his many collaborations with longtime writing partner Alex Kurtzman (with whom Orci co-wrote 2009’s Star Trek and last year’s Star Trek Into Darkness). The duo is also well-known for co-creating Sleepy Hollow and Fringe for Fox.
Orci has apparently been lobbying hard for the job and outside of Attack the Block writer-director Joe Cornish, seemed to be the only name being kicked around to direct Star Trek 3. Presumably Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and the rest of the Star Trek gang will make appearances in the sequel, which will probably have to deal with the ramifications of the evil Starfleet from Into Darkness.
Orci is probably going to be a controversial choice for some Star Trek fans (including the one writing this article). The real hope here is that the next film won’t needlessly crib from other movies in the franchise and strike out with something new.

So we follow up a very flawed into darkness with a 9/11 truther who is a terrible writer attempting his first director job on a huge tent pole franchise….well Star Trek was fun again for one movie.
I have concerns that a first time director with two novice writers can do Star Trek justice. 2009 and STID were okay (and I LOVE the new cast) but I was dismayed at the sexism, the lack of diversity and the gaping plot holes.

He’s gonna make sure Jim’s a sexist dick, turn the whole thing into this mysoginistic crap that star trek isn’t and never was (it was the most feminist show of its era- hell, it’s still progressive for today), he’s not going to even CARE about the amount of effort that went into creating alien races for that show (see: turning Spock into the nerd that got the girl) or the elaborate backstories (see: botching Kahn entirely), or the progressive, accepting message that Star Trek has. I hate seeing this show get botched in reboot. I just… I hate it

Look on the bright side, after Star Trek V it isn’t theoretically possible to create a “Worst Star Trek of all Time” movie.
Star Trek: Generations is far, far worse than The Final Frontier. I’ll take a faux God over an energy ribbon any day.

I don’t want to go overboard but this makes me want to completely skip the movie. The script was the worst thing by far of both movies and generally anything he works on. Combine that with his zero experience directing and this seems like disaster.
I’m a lifelong trek fan and the only two movies I don’t own are the ones he’s worked on. I can’t understand what paramount is thinking.
