SCREAM QUEENS Recap: Blood Drive

Editor’s Note: This post contains spoilers for Scream Queens. Proceed at your own risk if you’re not caught up.

While most of Scream Queens plot has been pretty predictable this season, I honestly didn’t see this one coming. In the wake of last week’s big reveal that Doctor Cascade (Taylor Lautner) was this season’s mystery baby, “Blood Drive” taught us more about Nurse Hoeffel, who has been hiding in the shadows for most of the season, including her direct tie to season one. We also learned who the Green Meanie was and that there is more than one running amok in the hospital. There is a lot of ground to cover, so let’s get started.

With everything going on at the moment, Chanel and the rest of the girls (including Munsch) decided the best solution was to host a blood drive. The slogan “We’ve lost a lot of blood, so donate yours,” was offered up by Chanel, along with her services as an expert phlebotomist. To make things exciting, Nurse Hoeffel (Kirstie Alley) put a trip to Blood Island on the line for whoever collected the most blood.

Before announcing the contest, however, Hoeffel revealed that she is actually the sister of Agatha Bean, the housekeeper that had her face burned off in season one. Hoeffel blamed the Chanels for what happened to Agatha, and weasled her way into the C.U.R.E. Institute after she found out they’d be working there. In addition to making their lives miserable, Hoeffel has been calling into an anonymous tip line and saying the Chanels are responsible for the hospital’s Green Meanie massacre.

But as Hoeffel pointed out, that doesn’t mean she is the Green Meanie. That means that someone else is running around as the killer, and we’re betting it’s Doctor Cascade. But for now, let’s reverse back to the introduction of the blood drive. Chanel is determined to get back to her former lifestyle of luxurious island vacations, and the best way to do that is by winning the contest. But because Chanel is Chanel, somebody is going to get hurt in the process.

To climb her way to the top, Chanel used her loyal followers (especially No. 5) as human blood bags. Things got complicated when Dean Munsch revealed to Chanel, Dr. Holt, and Nurse Hoeffel that Chanel’s blood was tainted with STDs, which knocked her out of the lead after her own blood had to be removed from her batch–and made her less desirable to Dr. Holt in the process.

Meanwhile, Hester was unleashed on one of the patients to prevent her from using her free time to think about ways to murder people. Munsch hesitantly put her on the case of a guy who thinks he is a vampire. After Munsch offered her the chance to stay in the hospital longer if she could diagnose and cure the guy, Hester set out on a mission to do just that with aversion therapy. In this case, the treatment involved forcing the patient to ingest blood until he got sick and no longer craved it. Despite the madness, Hester landed on a very real disease called Porphyria before setting off to treat him.

Unfortunately for Chanel, Hester’s plan involved locating A LOT of blood. Hester dipped into Chanel’s stash of blood bags she’d collected for the competition to feed them to the patient. When that wasn’t enough, Hester took Chanel’s own blood from the bags Chamberlain was prepared to throw out. Before giving them to the patient however, she tested the blood for STDS. As expected, the blood was completely clean, and Chanel was off the hook… but still running low on blood.

Luckily for Chanel (and unluckily for No. 9), the rest of the blood she needed to win the contest showed up just in time. While she was desperate to add more to her dwindling stash, Chanel strapped No. 9 down and set up an IV to take blood out. Immediately after hooking her up to a blood bag, Chanel stepped out for a minute to chat with Dr. Holt. While she was outside, the Green Meanie and Nurse Hoeffel had a chat of their own.

When Hoeffel assured the Meanie she was on his/her side, the killer removed the mask to reveal Dr. Cascade.  So just in case you were thinking that making him the Green Meanie was too obvious, now you have your answer. Of course, it’s not that simple. According to Cascade, there’s another killer running around in the costume, and he doesn’t know who it is. With Zayday hot on Cascade’s trail by figuring out she could match blood types of suspects to the parents, the young male Doctor got smart and swapped out the blood type on his own blood bags.

The other killer could be a number of other people, including one of the characters we’ve been seeing every week or ones who we haven’t seen since last summer. Whatever happened to Grace? Are past Chanels (we’re looking at you, Ariana Grande) really dead? We can’t wait to get more hints when Scream Queens returns next week.
