Scream at a Wall: The Post-Punk Days of Summer Are Here

Wipe the blood from your teeth and get in the pit: it’s time for a recap of this week’s best hardcore, metal, and punk rock. We dug through the record crates to find the new tunes we think you need to spin and rage to. Looking for some new death metal to bring into your life? Got you covered. Need some grindcore to get your wedding reception off on the right foot? Need some cool post-punk to get you through the blazing hot days of August? Say no more. Strap in kiddies, it’s time to rock.

The Menzingers are depressingly cool. When the blazing heat of heavy metal and raging hardcore is too much to take, cover yourself in the sad, post-punk jams of this band. In fact, these dudes just released a new song, titled “Lookers” and it’s all about getting older and how much everything sucks. It’s also a great song, so it’s a smooth pill to swallow. These guys’ last album, Rented World, came out in 2014, so it would seem like the time is right for a new record. There’s nothing official yet, but a new track like “Lookers” is a promising start. We dig this song a lot, and if you like bands like Gaslight Anthem you’ll dig it, too. Give it a listen below and don’t be afraid to look in the mirror and embrace your own mortality.

If you need to cool off even more, it doesn’t get much cooler than this Kamikaze Girls track. “Ladyfuzz” is story-driven track that takes you down the roads of melancholy and depression. The accompanying video is a first-person journey through loneliness, intoxication, and empty landscapes. Kamikaze Girls play a dreamy brand of post-punk that’s drenched in fuzz and melody. The emotion just bleeds all over this thing and that’s a big part of what we love about it. We can’t wait to hear more from this band, as “Ladyfuzz” is a track we’ve already had on repeat for days.

The mellow and heavy sounds of True Widow are the perfect soundtrack to the dog days of summer. Their new album, Awolgere, is almost upon us and we can’t wait. Everything we love about this band is embodied in the newly released track “Theurgist,” which you can hear below. Measured, groove-driven, and heavy, True Widow are a band that always delivers. Awolgere is going to blow everyone away when it hits, so get ready by cranking their newest jam and sipping some iced tea. Stay cool with True Widow, beat the heat with this heavy fuzz rick.

You cooled down? Feeling relaxed? Good, now get up and let’s freaking rage. Angry Gods are a droning and brutal act that will crush you beneath their sludgy rhythm. They just released an album called The Clearing and holy crap it’s awesome. It’s low-fi, angry, and relentless. Call it hardcore, call it metal, call it whatever you want, we love it. Angry Gods are perfect for those bitter, intense summer evenings when you need to set something on fire and maybe flip over a cop car. Embrace your angry and listen to Angry Gods. You won’t regret it, unless you actually flip over a cop car in which case you could go to jail.

Lies are punk as all hell. You like your music fast, brutal, and filled with blasting growls? Then check out this band. None of their songs even crack the two minute mark, they just blaze through, destroy everything in sight, and move on to the next track. Lies features members of The Hope Conspiracy – one of our favorite hardcore bands ever – so maybe we are just predisposed to loving them. Whatever the case, we can;t help but love this trashy, gutter rock. Listening to this band feels dangerous, and we mean that as a compliment.

If you are looking for something with more of a classic metal vibe, check out Fuzz Evil. These guys play riff-heavy, reverb-infused metal that sounds like they’d be a killer opening act for Led Zeppelin. Its got a stoner, dessert vibe, like a hint of Kyuss or older Queens of the Stone Age. This is stuff you and your dad could listen to while chopping wood or something. Look, I don’t know what you and your dad do to bond, okay? Whatever you do, try putting some Fuzz Evil on in the background and see if it brings you closer through the power of riffs. Worth a shot.

Lastly, we bring you Spirit Adrift. This is band we’ve been telling you about for some time now, and the time has come to embrace them. Their debut full length, Chained to Oblivion is out now and it’s awesome. Cinematic, epic, and consuming, Spirit Adrift is a band you don’t just listen to; you experience them. We highly recommend Chained to Oblivion, it’s unlike anything else out there right now, a wholly unique album that is bigger than life. Everything about it is cranked to the max, everything about it is pushing at the edge of reason and sanity. You’d be doing yourself a great disservice to skip this album, it’s just too damn good.
